Abstract:Based on monthly rainfall of 25 rainfall stations in Southern Liaoning Province from 1974 to 2013, seasonal and spatial distributions, trends and periodical variation of rainfall were analyzed. In addition, drought and flood characteristics were investigated. The rainfalls in summer are the heaviest, followed by autumn, spring, and winter. The rainfall amounts for respected seasons are 411.6 mm, 117.7 mm, 101.3 mm, and 23.3 mm, respectively, accounting for 64.6%, 17.2%, 14.8%, and 3.4% of annual rainfall. Spatial distribution of annual and seasonal rainfall is not uniform. It varies from heaviest in the northeast to the lightest in the southwest. An increasing trend is detected for spring rainfall but no trend in other seasons, while the decadal wet and dry oscillation is obvious. 2.2~3.2 years are the main periods for annual and seasonal rainfall, with the variance contribution of 37.3%~80.0%. In addition, there are also periods of 8.0~9.1 years, 16.0~21.3 years, and 32.0 years. Rainfall in different seasons are not significantly correlated, indicating significant phenomena of drought-flood coexistence and droughts-floods abrupt alternation. From 1974 to 2013, drought-flood coexistence occurred in 22 years, accounting for 55%, among which, 10 years saw droughts-floods abrupt alternation, accounting for 25%. In flood control and drought mitigation practices, we should pay attention to the above situation.
