The impacts and countermeasures of developing urban flood control systems around Taihu Lake

Abstract：Taihu Basin has been highly urbanized and its economics well developed. To ensure flood prevention security for cities, in recent years urban flood control system has been built around Taihu Lake including Suzhou,Huzhou,Jiaxing,Wuxi and Changzhou,with flood protection standard of 100-years or 200-years in the central urban areas. In this paper,the constructions of flood control projects were summarized for five cities. Using river network mathematical model,the influences of urban flood control system operation were analyzed. Based on the results, the countermeasures and discussions are proposed, which may provide references for local and urban flood management.
