Abstract:The river system in Chengdu is well-developed, and the precipitations have the characteristics of uneven distribution during the year and large inter-annual variability. There is a large variation in river runoff between flood season and non- flood season in Chengdu, and flood disasters occur frequently. In August 2020, Chengdu suffered four continuous heavy rainfalls causing severe floods, which are rare in history. In order to further understand the characteristics of flood disasters, and put forward scientific and reasonable flood prevention and disaster reduction measures, this article investigates the rainfall conditions, hydraulic conditions of river, and disaster characteristics in Chengdu in August 2020, and summarizes the types of floods. It also analyzes the causes of flood and waterlogging disasters from the topographical conditions and rainfall characteristics, combines the key points and bottlenecks of flood prevention in Chengdu, and put forward countermeasures.
