Study on spatial-and-temporal characteristics of typical drought events in Sichuan Province

Abstract:Based on the rainfall data of Sichuan Province from 1992 to 2022, the spatial and temporal characteristics of typical drought events in Sichuan Province in the past 20 years were analyzed using the monthly- scale standardized precipitation index (SPI). The results show that: ①severe droughts occurred in 2001, 2006, and 2011, with the largest areas of extreme drought in April and May 2001 and July 2011, and the most severe overall droughts in May 2001, August 2006, and July 2022; ②moderate droughts dominated in 2006 and 2016, while August 2011 and June to August 2022 were severe and moderate droughts; ③the 2001 and 2022 droughts covered almost the entire province, and the droughts in 2006, 2011 and 2016 occurred mostly in the western, southern, and northeastern; ④2001, 2006 and 2022 droughts caused a large area of water shortage in the province; the 2011 drought caused more severe damage in Yibin.
